We’ve gotten word of another closure of Tibet to foreign nationals effective immediately. This comes after two monks self-immolated themselves in Lhasa last week. Within the last month, Chinese authorities had restricted entry into Tibet to groups of 5 or more and everyone had to be of the same nationality and traveling on the same itinerary. So this new restriction comes as quite a shock, especially since it’s the beginning of the high tourist season there.

Tibet will likely open again, but it’s unknown when. Here’s a story from the ABC News web site.

There are other options for getting a Tibetan Buddhism experience for those that will need to reschedule already planned tours. They include Yunnan Province in China, particularly in the Shangri-La region; Ladakh, in far Nothern India; and Dharamsala in the foothills of the India Himalaya.
